Holbeach woman who drove friend home drunk ‘will lose job’

A 21-year-old Holbeach woman will lose her job after she drove her friend away from a nightclub where she had been assaulted, a court has been told.

Brittany Hughes of The Chase, admitted driving while under the influence of alcohol when she appeared at Boston Magistrates Court.

Prosecuting, Andy Convoy said police were told on October 9 that there was a suspected drunk driver in a Ford Fiesta and at 12.35am, they found the car in Pinchbeck Road in Spalding.

He said she was entirely cooperative with the police and was arrested following a positive breath test, subsequently giving a reading of 50 micrograms of alcohol in her breath, the legal limit being 35.

Mitigating, Philippa Chatterton said Ms Hughes was of ‘previous good character’ and on this day she had gone to a night club with a friend intending to get a taxi home.

She said that the friend had been assaulted and Ms Hughes had been trying to get the friend away as the offender was still around, but they had been unable to get a taxi or find anyone to give them a lift, so she she had ‘foolishly’ used her car, intending to park away from the nightclub and then try and find a taxi.

Ms Chatterton said Ms Hughes would now lose her job as she had to drive to Kings Lynn early in the morning and she had no alternative way of getting there.

Ms Hughes was banned from driving for 15 months but was offered the drink rivers’ rehabilitation course, which will reduce the period of the ban by 15 weeks.

She was also fined £120 and ordered to pay a total of £119 in court costs and charges.
