LETTERS – Residents’ responsibility for rubbish

We have recently come to live in Spalding after living in France for 20 years.

There we lived in a commune of three villages all of which were served by one household waste tip.

We also had weekly bin collections, one for recyclables and one for bagged general waste. For access to the household waste tip each resident had a pass which allowed 12 visits per year.

Building waste, tyres and more were included at the tip so generally there wasn’t a problem with fly tipping. They did not operate a booking system. There were also a couple of small containers for paper and glass outside the gate for when the tip was closed.

Since coming to live in Spalding we have been impressed with the lack of litter – well done The Wombles – compared with some outlying villages.

We are also very impressed with the household waste tip and the booking system and fail to understand why people are complaining about it. Surely it is possible for a householder to organise their lawn or hedge cuttings into bags to take to the tip at a booked time? We do it. Or if the garden is large enough, build a compost heap.

The same with dropping any rubbish off en route for work. Why can that not be included in the rubbish bags provided by SHDC and collected every week?

The thought of having to join a queue along West Marsh Road fills us with dismay. Hopefully the booking system will be made permanent.

It’s up to residents to organise their rubbish disposal to take advantage of all the options available to them.
