Pinchbeck United made a stunning start to the new ChromaSport Peterborough Premier Division season as they won 3-1 at hotly-tipped Netherton United on Saturday.
In what was a largely even contest, Pinchbeck went ahead on 15 minutes when former Holbeach United ace Ash Murrell made no mistake after being slipped through.
It was 2-0 soon after when a strike from debutant defender Mark Thompson was deflected into the net for what could eventually go down as an own goal.
Skipper Ollie Maltby – who had missed a sitter a few minutes earlier – then rammed home number three from 18 yards on the half hour.
Although Netherton pulled one back from the penalty spot in the second period, it was already very much game over as player/boss Ian Dunn toasted a winning start to his second stint at Knight Street.
Elsewhere in the top flight, promoted Holbeach United Reserves earned a 1-1 draw with Sawtry in their first game back in the Peterborough League’s top flight.
Paul Newcombe had put Omar Joof’s Tigers ahead, but they were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
Down in Division One, Long Sutton Athletic got their campaign under way with a 2-2 draw against Whittlesey Blue Star at London Road.
