Urgent work on trees at reserve

Work on trees in a Holbeach nature reserve is to be carried after around 30 graves were destroyed by one falling in a nearby cemetery.

A meeting of Holbeach Parish Council last week heard that the authority would look to take urgent action at the Fishpond Lane open space as it was found work needed to be carried out on a number of trees.

Last month strong winds felled a tree in Holbeach Cemetery.

It destroyed a number of graves, which are dated from the 1880s to the 1930s, in the non-consecrated section of the cemetery.

The council apologised to affected families on its Facebook page while also praising park staff who dealt with the tree and cleaned up the cemetery.

Coun Rachel Wood told the meeting: “We don’t want to be in the same situation as in the Park Road cemetery.

“We don’t want trees coming down and it creating more costs. We are damned now and we need to get this moving forward.”

Councillors spoke about getting the correct tender process for tree surgeons to ensure the safety of the foliage at Fishpond Lane and also mentioned the possibility of holding an extraordinary meeting of the council to decide on the future of the trees.

Coun Peter Sparkes added: There’s no real reason not to take proactive action and get this sorted.
