Barnes pleased with Holbeach United’s character after securing late point at Desborough

A goal six minutes into added time from Josh Ford earned Holbeach United a deserved draw at Desborough Town on Saturday.

On a wet and dreary day in Northamptonshire, Barnes Gladman’s first-half strike looked to be enough to separate the sides.

But frontman Ford struck deep into added time to make it four Uhlsport UCL Premier Division games unbeaten for Phil Barnes’ Tigers.

The Holbeach chief felt that a share of the spoils was the least his side deserved – and praised the referee for punishing Desborough for what he felt was excessive time wasting.

“If anybody deserved to win, it was us,” said Barnes. “But yes, a draw was certainly the least we deserved.

“We had a lot of possession on the day, but probably created a bit less than we have been doing.

“Their goalkeeper had a great game, he was their best player which should tell you all you need to know about the game.

“Once they went ahead, they shut up shop and I think there was a lot of time wasting going on.

“Fair play to the referee, he didn’t let them get away with it. He said there was going to be four added minutes, but Josh’s goal came with 96 on the clock – so the time wasting came back to bite them a bit.

“Overall, I’m happy with the character we showed. We obviously wanted to win the game, but to keep fighting until the end shows what we are made of.”
