Demolition work begins on homes

Work on the most northerly section of the Spalding Western Relief Road is to step up with demolition work on homes around Spalding Road in Pinchbeck having begun.

The homes are making way for the most northerly section of the road which is to be built in five separate sections.
Karen Cassar, assistant director for Highways at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “We’re now at the stage where we will be taking down two properties on Spalding Road as part of the preparatory works before main construction of this phase of the Spalding Western Relief Road.
“These works will last about three weeks and will involve health and safety checks, disassembling the properties and removing all of the materials from site.
“Following that, we will be clearing vegetation along the route, constructing the scheme’s permanent site compound and building the temporary haul roads for construction traffic – all ahead of starting main works later this year.”
The most northerly and southerly section have planning permission while funding has yet to be found for the three middle sections.
As previously reported, the cost of the part of the road from Spalding Road has risen by £8m taking the total for that section alone to £28m. A government grant has been allocated to cover the extra costs.
But a report recently to Lincolnshire County Council’s Highways and Transport Committee stated that designers were looking to reduce costs on the section even further.
It said: “Detailed designs of the section are progressing and due to be completed by the end of 2020.
“This includes a re-design of the bridge and embankment to reduce costs following input from the contractor.
“Main works are planned to start in early 2021 following land transfer agreements and signing the bridge agreement with Network Rail.”
