Four-midable Long Sutton Sunday stay perfect after winning high-scoring clash

Long Sutton 2nd held off a Weldon onslaught to claim a 21-run victory in Division Three of the Rutland League on Sunday.

In a high-scoring game, Sutton’s Sunday best put themselves in a commanding position by cracking 216-3 (31 over match) after winning the toss and opting to bat.

Dan Oldfield (78) and Raj Sangha (64) did much of the damage at the top of the order and left their hosts a tough task.

However, an unbeaten 113 from Weldon opener Zak Gillies threatened to spoil their party in a game that saw bat dominate ball.

Fresh from his strong showing for the first team on Saturday, Oldfield was on-song again with the bat some 24 hours later.

He hit seven fours and two sixes with a super 78, while fellow opener Sangha found the boundary five times in his 64.

They both eventually fell to the bowling of Joey Harris, but Luke Lovegrove (19) and Angus Bell (22 not out) added runs at the end of the innings to ensure Sutton passed 200.

Weldon embraced their challenge and attacked Sutton’s bowlers in reply.
Gillies cracked 16 fours and six in his unbeaten ton, piling the pressure on the away attack.

Cameron Simpson (19) was caught and bowled by Rob Simpson (1-19), Keira Potter (5) out LBW to James Baker (5) and the spin of Jake Burton removed Michael Noone (0).

But skipper Matt Hay (44 not out) joined Gillies and the pair got close to their tally before falling just shy.

The win leaves Sutton top of the table with four wins from four.
