Barry’s biking birthday bid

A Spalding Cycling Club stalwart is to mark his 72nd birthday today (Thursday) by taking on a more than eight hour charity bike ride without leaving his own home.

Active Barry Drew is classed as vulnerable so can’t volunteer to help with deliveries as many of his clubmates have done.

So instead he’s going to mark his birthday today by getting on his static bike for around eight and a half hours to raise money for the Friends of Johnson Hospital charity that helps provide items for the Spalding hospital.

Barry said: “Several of the Spalding Cycling Club members have been helping out by doing deliveries to people in need however, because I am considered a vulnerable person, I have felt it unwise to go out and do things like that.

“But I did want to do something that could help in some way or other.

“So, for my 72nd birthday I have decided that I will do a charity challenge on my static bicycle.

“I will be attempting to do ten Sufferfest videos in one day with no more than ten minutes’ break between each one so approximately eight hours and 30 minutes.

“I have chosen to raise money for the Friends of Johnson Hospital as I think that it is not just now in times of extreme pressure but hopefully, when we get through this we will still need our local hospital.

“I have opened up a GoFundMe page and hope that although times are a bit hard at the moment financially any support people can give me will be an incentive to complete my challenge.”
