Alicia shortlisted for national horse riding instructor award

A riding instructor at stables in West Pinchbeck got a nice surprise after hearing that she had been shortlisted for a national award.

Alicia Horton, of Gosberton Risegate, is one of just five instructors from across the country to have made it through to the final of the Associated British Riding Schools’ Golden Spur Award.
This highly prized award tests instructors on the quality of their teaching and business skills.

Alicia (24) has taught at Four Winds Equestrian Centre, in Leaveslake Drove, for several years, helping people of all ages and abilities to ride.
She had no idea that centre owner Paula Leverton had nominated her for the award until the final contestants were announced last week (July 21).

Alicia said: “It was a real shock to see I had been put through for this prestigious national award but also an immense honour.
“I often say that I have the best job in the world but to be able to have national recognition would be the cherry on the cake.”

Paula, who has recently celebrated her 35th anniversary of owning the centre, said: “Alicia is one of our most popular instructors at the centre and has helped so many people to gain confidence to ride.
“She thoroughly deserves this honour.”

Alicia will be heading to Witham Villa Riding Centre in Leicester on Monday, August 8, for the award’s final assessment. During the day, she will be put through her paces by teaching a group and private lessons along with a discussion section.
“I am looking forward to the challenge of this award and hope to do everyone proud,” said Alicia.

She has already displayed great commercial acumen by coming up with the idea of a pony camp for adults, who missed out on all the fun as children.

The inaugural session will be held on Thursday and Friday, August 11 and 12, when riders will receive flatwork and jumping lessons along with a hack.

Those taking part will also be able to watch a dressage and grooming display by high ranking practitioners. Places are still available from 01775 640533.
