£1m lottery argument goes national

A former couple from Spalding have made national headlines over a £1m winning National Lottery scratchcard.

Michael Cartlidge appeared in The Sun newspaper claiming he should get half of the pay out because he persuaded then girlfriend Charlotte Cox to purchase the winning ticket.
But after three months together the couple split up just weeks later and operator Allwyn has since ruled that as the ticket was bought by Charlotte, the winnings are hers.
Michael told The Sun: “I am in shock. I can openly admit that we wouldn’t have got that ticket without Charlotte, but she wouldn’t have got it without me either.
‘I know it was her bank account that paid for it, but it should go 50-50 morally.”
He also claimed that he’d tried to transfer the money for the ticket but it didn’t go through in the shop.
Allwyn, which recently took over operating the National Lottery from Camelot, told The Sun that “only one person can be the owner of a ticket and only the person whose name and address is written on the back of a winning scratchcard can claim a prize”.
The ticket was bought at the Nisa brand Kehla’s Late Shopper on Holbeach Road in Spalding in November.
“It was a great moment when we found out a £1m ticket had been bought from the shop,” said owner Ranjit Khela. “We didn’t know until a few days after it had been bought.
“It’s the biggest win in the shop by far.”
