1,700 households on waiting list for South Holland garden waste scheme

More than 1,700 households are waiting to join South Holland District Council’s garden waste collection service.

The two-year trial began in April this year and capacity was reached within three months, with all 2,670 of the 25-litre brown bins issued.

Councillors will shortly be asked to consider a business case for extending the scheme, which currently operates with just one lorry.

Under the trial, householders pay £49 annually, which entitles them to up to 24 fortnightly collections. An alternative for residents with less garden waste is a pack of ten paper sacks at £15 (plus £5 delivery).

The council’s initial “target area” covers parts of Spalding, Holbeach, Crowland, Long Sutton, Sutton Bridge and Donington. There are 560 households in the target area on the waiting list, and outside that area there are a further 1,208.

Coun Roger Gambba-Jones, portfolio holder for waste, said: “The garden waste collection trial began in April this year and we reached our target by July which was fantastic.
“The service is subscription-based, meaning residents who do not have the service are not paying for it.
“We are currently building evidence as part of a business case to go before council later this year to see whether the trial, which will run for at least another year, could be expanded into areas where we currently do not collect.”
