£10m year-long roundabout works

Road improvements lasting a year and costing £10m are planned for the A16 in Spalding later this year.

Both the Springfields and Greencell roundabouts on the Boston-side of the town are due to have additional lanes.
Springfields roundabout is first on the list with work due to start this autumn.
“The aim of the two projects is to make each roundabout bigger, not only to reduce congestion and improve journey time, but also create more capacity on the A16 for the agri-food sector delivery vehicles,” said Coun Richard Davies, executive member for highways at the county council.
Work at the Springfields site will take up to a year and see additional approach lanes on the A16 and a extended entry lanes on the A151 approaches.
The Greencell roundabout improvements are planned to start in the summer of 2024. It will be a nine-month project.
In addition to the roundabout being made bigger with the junction widened to provide two wider lanes, the two-lane approaches and exits on the A16 will be lengthened.
Both projects will also include a complete rebuild of the roundabouts’ drainage systems, along with new surfacing, signs, lines and lighting columns installed.
Specific start dates and traffic management details will be confirmed nearer the time, says the county council.
“Not only will improving the A16 corridor benefit residents by way of better walking and cycling facilities and reduced traffic congestion, but it will also open up the area for further investment opportunities,” said Coun Davies.
Both the improvement schemes are being funded as part of the government’s £20m Levelling-Up process.
“Investing more into improved transport infrastructure is a priority for Greater Lincolnshire, and these works will complement other local transport and renewal projects underway or planned throughout the county,” added Coun Davies.
The work follows current schemes at Boston’s Marsh Lane Roundabout.
