A Spalding man is walking 1,000 miles in 100 days to raise money for charity in his second fundraising event in six months.
Nigel Wickenden, of Smithdale Close, starts his sponsored walk in aid of the Army Benevolent Fund – The Soldiers’ Charity today (Thursday).
Back in October he took part in The Frontline Walk – a 100km trek to commemorate the sacrifices made by those who fought for our freedom while helping to support the soldiers and veterans of today.
Nigel said: “It was a physically and emotionally tough challenge, but I did it all for a great cause: ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, the National Charity of the British Army. They support soldiers, veterans and their families when they need it most.”
He’s now taking on a new challenge and has a five-mile route planned out, which he intends to do twice a day.
He will start at Smithdale Close, walk up Fairview Way to the Vernatt’s Drain, along it just past Jobson’s Bridge and by a footpath at the side of a field to Bourne Road.
He then turns left on to Monk’s House Lane to the first roundabout, footpath back to Jobson’s Bridge and reverse the outbound route.
He said: “Most days the first trip will be after I have walked the mile to town for shopping which I carry home in a red rucksack.
“I normally do the route with a red bum bag carrying water and waterproofs.
“Please give a shout of encouragement if you see me.
“I am hoping people will donate at least 1p per mile.”
The Army Benevolent Fund – The Soldiers’ Charity is the UK’s oldest Army charity, started in 1944.
