Super efforts in marathon

A Saracen’s Head man broke a world record, while Spalding United’s kit man made it £37,000 for charity at Sunday’s London Marathon.

Simon Killen dressed as Nintendo’s Super Mario clocked two hours, 52 minutes, 57 seconds to set the world record of Fastest Marathon in a Videogame Costume.
He knocked four minutes of the existing record and was met by a representative from the Guinness Book of World Records at the finish line.
Simon, who works at Prince’s Foods in Long Sutton, also managed to grow his own impressive Mario moustache for the event.
“I had a fantastic day,” said the representative of Three Counties Running Club. “The weather was perfect for wearing a costume – cool and dry, and the spectators were very supportive.
“I trained for six months prior to the event, mostly by running but also with cycling and swimming, and was lucky enough to avoid injuries along the way.
“You need a good slice of luck with these things. I am a member of Three Counties Running Club, and their support made a huge difference over the weekend.”
l In what could be one of the biggest weeks in Spalding United FC’s history, their kit man Rob Green knocked over an hour off his marathon personal best while taking his fundraising total past £37,000.
The Tulips will win the Pitching In Northern Premier League Midland Division on Saturday if they beat Coleshill Town.
It would cap a fine week for Rob who ran five hours and 14 minutes on Sunday.
He was diagnosed with bladder cancer aged 11 and was, at the time, the youngest person in Britain to go through the surgery.
He’s since taken to raising money for the charity Children With Cancer.
It was the third time the father of two has taken part in the London Marathon and his fourth 26.2-mile run overall, with his £2,770 raised from the latest run adding to the tally.
Rob has lost just under seven stone in weight and smashed his personal best.
“All my hard work in training paid off massively,” said the 33-year-old. “Anything is possible with heart, hard work and determination.”
